ANDREW GARFIELD TO RECEIVE THE 2011 MAUI FILM FESTIVAL MALE SHINING STAR AWARD

Wailea, HI (June 3, 2011) – Andrew Garfield will receive the 2011 Maui Film Festival Male Shining Star Award, it was announced today by Barry Rivers, Director of the event, which will be held June 15-19, 2011, at the Wailea Resort in Maui. The Male Shining Star Award honors a film artist, still in the ascendance of his career—with many magnetic performances both behind and ahead of him—whose very presence on screen guarantees as much light as heat.  Garfield will be presented the Male Shining Star Award at the Celestial Cinema located at the Wailea Gold & Emerald Golf Course on Saturday, June 18, 2011.

“It’s a personal and professional pleasure to have the honor and privilege of presenting Andrew Garfield with this year’s Male Shining Star Award,” said Maui Film Festival Director Barry Rivers.  “His boundless talent and impeccable taste have caused him to be embraced by the industry as few ever are.  We are thrilled to be able to extend him this heartfelt tribute.”

Garfield recently completed filming as the lead role of Peter Parker in "The Amazing Spider-Man.”  Directed by Marc Webb and co-starring Emma Stone, Martin Sheen and Rhys Ifans, the film is slated for a July 2012 release.  Since it’s 2010 release, Garfield is most recently known for his notable performance in David Fincher's "The Social Network,” which earned him the Best British Supporting Actor award at the London Film Critics Circle Awards and was nominated at the BAFTA Awards for Best Actor in a Supporting Role and Golden Globe Awards for Best Supporting Actor.  Also, Garfield’s performance in Mark Romanek’s “Never Let Me Go,” which earned him a Best Supporting Actor nomination at the British Independent Film Awards.  In 2010, the entire scope of his work earned him addition awards including the Hollywood Award for Breakthrough Actor and the Evening Standard British Film Award for Best Actor and he was also nominated for the BAFTA Rising Star Award.

Other past screen projects include Terry Gilliam's "The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus," opposite Christopher Plummer, Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell, Jude Law and the late Heath Ledger; Spike Jonze's "I’m Here;" Robert Redford’s "Lions For Lambs," alongside Redford, Tom Cruise and Meryl Streep; Revolution Films’ "Red Riding Trilogy -1974," directed by Julian Jarrold; and John Crowley’s "Boy A," for which he earned the Best Actor BAFTA in 2008.
